How might Coro impact breastfeeding?
Coro is a form of silicone nipple shield, with a flow sensor and small pod that holds our state of the art technology. It has been designed to resemble normal nipple shields as much as possible and can be positioned in many ways so that it does not disrupt your baby’s latch.
Research carried out to explore how nipple shields might impact breastfeeding reports mixed conclusions. One group showed that milk transfer may be impacted by nipple shields with babies who have not used them before, but for those accustomed to using shields no such impact was reported.
We believe that with a little bit of practice and appropriate guidance on how to latch with Coro, it is unlikely to negatively impact milk transfer, but it is important to keep the above findings in mind. Check out our blog post on attachment and positioning for guidance on latching your baby with and without a nipple shield.
Other studies have looked into the impact of shields on breastfeeding rates and maternal satisfaction. Again, results are mixed but high rates of maternal satisfaction were reported in one study and others suggest that shields can assist with breastfeeding initiation and in overcoming breastfeeding difficulties. How should I interpret the information Coro provides?
Coro provides a snapshot of insight into breast milk transfer. Data on milk feed volumes can be viewed in real-time via the app on your phone. Coro has been designed to be a helpful tool in your toolkit as you navigate breastfeeding. When keeping the below considerations in mind Coro can help you make informed and confident choices about how to feed your baby.
This data should be considered alongside important indicators of effective milk transfer and milk supply, including tracking babies’ nappies and monitoring weight gain. In our blog post we discuss the reliable indicators in full along with information on protecting and boosting your milk supply, click here to read more.
It is also important to remember that breastfeeding is variable and that feeding volumes and patterns can differ depending on many factors. This means that the information Coro provides may vary in line with these factors. We have explored how breastfeeding changes and why in detail in our blog post, read it here.
